It probably is most people's least favorite subject (more so than the other subjects) and I think there's a correlation there. study

I don't know how it exploded in mid-air though. It was blazing through the upper layers of the atmosphere like most objects that fall from space do but don't know why it would blow up essentially, in mid air that is.

As it's moving against friction from the atmosphere, it keeps gaining heat, and that translates to the inside of the meteor also heating up and gaining pressure. Once the pressure reaches a certain threshold, the outside can't handle it anymore and boom goes the meteor Razz

EDIT: That's one way a meteor can explode if it is inside the atmosphere. The shockwave from the one yesterday was produced when it impacted the Earth's atmosphere. The "blazing through the upper layers of the atmosphere" was actually after the shockwave was created and the meteor was fragmented.

I don't know which layer they usually dissolve in but its usually one of the upper levels like the thermosphere with its immense heat I believe. The stratosphere is below freezing I believe.

I can't get a straight answer from these articles. The guy said that it blew up from atmospheric entry and exploded somewhere between 12-15 miles above the surface. I don't remember the atmosphere being only 12-15 miles high... With the information given in an article on NBC, it exploded somewhere between the stratosphere and the troposphere.

Well facts being facts, I still find it incredible how something of that power can come so close to harming us and we can do nothing about it. It also makes me jealous of all those astronomers who study these crazy happenings, while I sit and write essays on linguistics.

I would have sworn that I read a Russian air defense unit got a shot off at it? Anyone hear that?

A Russian air defense unit was able to hit something going tens of thousands of miles per hour? Yeah...

That's what causes the trail. The shockwave is the atmospheric impact or internal explosion.

The burning up is caused by the compression of air

Yeah you're correct. I was describing "friction" as resistance by air in general, fail on me Razz

Haven't been hearing much about them now since its been over for a few days now but its been pretty strange in the sky lately...fireball over Northern California the other day and today or yesterday a fireball over Florida and of course on Friday the Russian meteorite and the big asteroid that nearly impacted the Earth.
