I thought a topic would be up about this by now. What do you all think of it?

I heard about this earlier today. Insane how just something like that can make that much of a disturbance.

Glad it wasn't a "world destroyer" size Laughing

Yeah it was really crazy. Heard many conflicting reports on it at first, some I still am not sure of.

At first it was reported a 10 ton meteor and then heard 7000 tons. First I heard it killed 500 but that was obviously wrong, but it did injure somewhere around that number (think I heard 1100)

Don't know how much more exactly but the explosion apparently was x times greater the energy of the Hiroshima explosion in 1945.

i had been looking forward for this for quite sometime. as the asteroid was 145 feet in diameter, it was only supposed to come within 17,000 miles.. i guess the astrologist were wrong.. this is a big supprise to me that it actually came in our atmosphere, this asteroid was predicted to hit on t he 15th of this year, in 2012.

Saw videos of it. While it didn't actually directly hit the ground, the sonic boom was insane. And where did you here that stuff about it being greater than the Hiroshima explosion Bronx? I hadn't heard that. O.o

Wrong asteroid viper. That one is still gonna miss. This one was completely "unrelated" to that one, though that's slightly hard to believe. But this one was much smaller.

news sources have said that it was the size of a bus, the sonic boom blew out all the windows in range, and there were over 400 casualties.

Well facts being facts, I still find it incredible how something of that power can come so close to harming us and we can do nothing about it. It also makes me jealous of all those astronomers who study these crazy happenings, while I sit and write essays on linguistics.

Yeah the big one still missed. It blew out all the windows. I didn't hear of any deaths, but the hospitals were full of people who were cut by flying glass.

I don't think it's long before we hear some conspiracy theory about this :p

Apparently we can only detect 1%~ of asteroids of smaller size in time to do anything about it, and only with average or lower accuracy.

There's really not much we could do about these things. From what I understand about the one thats supposed to buzz the Earth, is that its moving at 17 miles per second Shocked, something going that fast, I would think it would be almost impossible to intercept them with a missile. Thats also why they have so much force behind them, moving so fast and then hitting the earths atmosphere, its like hitting a brick wall. I read a few days ago if the one thats supposed to buzz the earth was to actually hit it would take out an area the size of new york and its the size of an Olympic pool.

I find it weird how two meteors showed up at the same time, the one that hit Russia is apparently a kind of meteor that falls to earth like everyday but usually in isolated places or in the ocean. That video was pretty cool, never seen anything like that before Surprised

Well I really dunno how can a thing weighing 10 tons take a clean arc turn this rapidly. I dunno how can a thing made up of ice and gas leave red bursts of flame (like rocket engines), and neither do I know how can a thing presumably from space carry radiation levels equal or lower to that of Earth. Confirmed info it's not radioactive as it should be. Means this thingy didn't leave atmosphere of Earth.
And the smoke trails..It was clearly broket into two traces, all the time.
Jet movement engines..?

Alright so this meteor was traveling at 33,000 to 40,000 mph which would be 9-11 miles per second (3600 mph = 1 mps)

And it had the explosiveness of 20 hiroshimas is what I read and heard.

Apparently it had exploded 12-15 miles above the surface....something I don't get, maybe someone more astronomically inclined can answer.

i wonder if any of the quantum physic stations, that detect space gravity wave picked up anything from this, because they never have in the past.

sorry for the double post, but the speed at which objects are in orbit is 7mps or faster, now the hiroshimas radius was not that big and it came very close to the ground, now 12-15 miles is actually around 70,000 feet, the planes of ww2 could only go about half that.

20 times Hiroshima could be correct. The Tunguska event was around 1000 Hiroshimas.

@Skarbrand the reason is sets on fire is that, as it enters the atmosphere at a high speed, it compresses the air in front of it, this means the gas (air) increases in temperature (same amount of energy in a smaller space) It heats the meteor to around 3000 degrees c, which gradually melts the meteor. And Bronx, this much energy canccause it to explode

Instead of saying sorry for double posting, just edit your post....that goes for everyone...

Don't know what the speed of orbit has to do with anything here but it depends where the object is orbiting. If you're on the surface and if you could move this fast, to orbit (to fall around the earth fast enough) you or an object would have to travel 8 kilometers a second (in miles 5mps i guess) because every second you'd fall 5 meters. If you're in geosynchronous orbit (moving at same speed of earth) which is 22,200~ miles above Earth, that would be...:

22,200 + 4000 (for radius of Earth) x 2pi (3.141~) / 24 / 3600

GEO satellites only travel around 2 miles a second (no/less gravity though)

I don't know how it exploded in mid-air though. It was blazing through the upper layers of the atmosphere like most objects that fall from space do but don't know why it would blow up essentially, in mid air that is.
